Really it can be all sorts of information. The most valuable, in my opinion, is often the philosopic underpinings or the basic "sciences" behind what we want to accomplish. Example of this might be Jakob Nielsen's book "Designing Web Usability". Here he makes the points of simplicity and usabilty; this is the basic philosopy.
